Natalie and Jon had their first date at her parents’ house near Evergreen Colorado so it was only fitting that the estate play the part of venue on their special day, their wedding day. If you read any of my musings you know that I see the wedding venue as the setting of the love story. Like any good setting of any great story, it can set the mood or determine the fate or simply have layers of meaning for the main characters.

Capturing the moment of Natalie getting ready and then saying “I do” in this place was perfection. As she told me stories of the connections in her life and the ups and downs of the roads she’s traveled, I did my best to tell the story in my own way. This Evergreen wedding photography isn’t about what she wore or what the latest trends are, though Natalie did look incredible in her wedding dress.

Instead, these amazing wedding photos tell a story of adventurous love. While we did walk in a meadow and get bugs in Natalie’s dress, that’s not the type of adventure I’m talking about. If you don’t know by now, let me just say that adventure isn’t just about the physical mountains that are the setting of many wedding days.

The physical mountains are only as impactful as the mountains we climb in our daily lives. The risks we take, the obstacles we overcome, and the decisions we make to be vulnerable all have an impact on where we are and where we are going. When we climb mountains we’re choosing to do hard things without guarantee of success or even views.

Instead, we use past experiences to tell ourselves it will be fun and worth it or we simply can’t not climb. Or without the double negative, we do it because we have to. Because not loving, not risking, not adventuring is simply not an option.

I always love it when I can learn something from a couple. These two provided. Lucille had a clear vision for certain portions of the wedding day as many brides do. And at the same time when there was a challenge that Trevor brought to her, she kept her focused on her love.

It was amazing to watch how these two leaned on each other for support and a reminder of what is truly important. And I say leaned on each other symbolically because they chose not to do a first look so they communicated while holding hands but not looking at each other. It was truly magical and one of the reasons I never push couples to do a first look if they don’t want to.

Cole and Taylor are a beautiful couple (inside and out) with contagious smiles. Their joy is evident in their wedding photography and being around them filled our cups. Having a pre-schooler (soon to be in kindergarten) makes me think about things like filling cups, and it really does matter.

Meeting Nicole and Ryan and getting to know them makes this Colorado wedding even more special to me. These two are now growing their family this spring and I can’t wait to see them grow as a couple. Weddings are so fun to witness because while a couple thinks they’re just decorating their wedding site, I know that they are learning how to work together for future challenges.

The entire night was filled with so much joy and smiles. From the setup to the dance party, love was is the air. Or in the barn? I don’t know, but love was everywhere and throughout this beautiful event and not even a huge thunderstorm could stop this amount of love.

Some of our favorite locations in the Colorado mountains for a wedding aren’t venues at all. We love helping couples elope in a beautiful setting off the grid. But we also love helping couples gather with their friends and families to support them, which often means finding a wedding venue with shelter, bathrooms, and parking lot among other simple comforts.

The Evergreen Lake House boasts a nice balance of comfort and nature that makes for a truly magical venue for your wedding ceremony. In this blog post, I’ll talk more about why we love shooting wedding photography at the Evergreen Lake house. Then, we’ll give some wedding planning tips. And of course, we’ll share some of our wedding photography from this special place.

Why We Love Weddings at Evergreen, CO Lake House

There are many challenges to getting married in Colorado’s rocky mountains. Many couples go on the search to a gorgeous venue dreaming of the perfect outdoor ceremony and celebratory reception nestled under the peaks. The problem is that a Colorado wedding is more complicated than that.

It might rain, snow, sleet, or throw any variety of weather conditions at you at any point in the year in Colorado. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love an adventure as much as anyone (probably more.) However, when it comes to weddings sometimes it’s nice to ensure the comfort of your guests.

Evergreen, Colorado is only an hour from the Denver airport or 30 minutes from downtown Denver and at an elevation of 7000 feet. While we’re still above the mile-high city, it’s not as bad as some higher-elevation wedding venues for your out-of-town guests that aren’t used to the altitude. You can have an outdoor ceremony on a mountain lake and still move indoors for dinner.

What Makes the Lake House Such a Beautiful Venue

Now, since wedding photography is our job, we always look at a wedding venue from the wedding photography standpoint. To be clear, the Evergreen Lake House doesn’t have big mountain views of giant rugged peaks, instead, it boasts rolling green mountains. So it may not be the most epic location to a wedding photographer that’s traveled to some of the world’s most magical places for weddings, but it’s a stunning venue nonetheless.

I personally love shooting at the Lake House because it’s incredibly familiar to me, being only a mile from my house. And at the same time, it is different every time I visit. Whether I’m anticipating fairytale snowfalls, enjoying the green of summer, or waiting for the ice skating rink to melt, I love the views from the lake.

As a wedding photographer, I love shooting both familiar are new locations as both provide entertaining space for my creativity. The Lake House has a lot of great angles from the outdoor deck or surrounding features to inside the building itself.

Tips for Planning a Lake House Wedding

As with any wedding planning, I always suggest deciding on what your priorities are so that you can allocate your budget accordingly. When it comes to checking all of the boxes, the Evergreen Lake House staff will give you a list of (and every provide an opportunity to meet) preferred caterers and other vendors. You don’t have to follow the list but if you do, you can be assured they’re used to working at the wedding venue.

The building has relatively simple decor with simple string lights, rustic mountain charm, and huge windows. You can decide how much or little work to do to transform it towards your wedding day vision. From there, it’s all about envisioning your wedding day and planning for a great experience.

Based on event date and your rental time (there are different time blocks) you’ll decide on other locations such as where to stay, get ready, or do a first look. We can always help with any of that from a wedding photography standpoint by showing you the best places and times for pictures.

I wanted to add a few notes for those of you that landed on the blog because you’re planning a wedding at sunrise amphitheater. Lost Gulch Overlook is a great nearby spot for couples portraits. While Lost Gulch can be crowded, we’ve never had a problem with other visitors instead they’re always happy to share Lost Gulch with the happy couple.

This stunning ceremony location on flagstaff mountain pairs perfectly with one of my favorite boulder wedding venues, the Flagstaff House restaurant. As I’ve been sharing in the last few weddings, the restaurant boasts incredible views and delicious eats.

I’ve found that most of our wedding couples that are drawn to flagstaff mountain are looking for a Colorado wedding filled with great views and a fun experience. If you rent sunrise amphitheater, you have the start of both for a very affordable price.

Best Timing for a Sunrise Amphitheater Wedding Ceremony

When it comes to the best timing for a sunrise amphitheater wedding, it depends on weather, lighting, and the experience you want to have. While it’s epic to watch sunrise from sunrise amphitheater, that’s not often most people’s vision for their wedding day. It involves getting up and getting ready far too early.

There are early morning one hour time slots or longer three hour time slots more mid-day. The parking lot is less crowded in the morning and facility reservations don’t prevent other people from being around. With its proximity to downtown Boulder, Flagstaff mountain can be popular but a Boulder wedding isn’t off the grid anyway.

And lastly, remember, the amphitheater is a rustic outdoor facility so there’s not a covered area and the steps aren’t simple to walk. If you have guests with mobility issues, give them extra time to get situated for your wedding ceremony.

Time of Year

Time of year is a consideration as well because Colorado wedding can be unpredictable. But there are certain things that you can count on. You can count on it being hot mid-day in the middle of summer. You can count of afternoon thunderstorms

Weddings take love, perseverance, courage, teamwork, communication, cooperation, and so much more. Mark and Robbie taught us so much as we captured their beautiful wedding day. When it comes to romantic restaurants for a setting of a love story, this wedding venue delivered.

The delicious food and bar service is only part of what makes this venue great. If the weather or other circumstances require it, the team can adapt for an indoor ceremony that is still elegant. Another fun note about this wedding was that their was a solar eclipse during the ceremony which felt very celebratory.

Our Evergreen Colorado wedding photography experience is one of locals. Not only do we love working event photography in the adorable mountain town, we call it home. Moving our business to Colorado from California was no small challenge but once we landed in Evergreen we knew we were home.

The town has just the right amount of pavement to nature. We have all of the major conveniences close by and we also have deer and elk frequent our backyard. It’s only an hour from Denver International Airport making it a great spot for destination weddings. You have the beauty of the mountains without the altitude and traffic.

Evergreen is a get-away that’s not too far and it boasts several adorable venues. It’s a great choice for couples looking for a low key mountain wedding.

The good news about Evergreen is that the weather is more mild than higher in the mountains but you’ll still want to be prepared for everything. Often the best photos come from the most exciting weather so it’s important to stay calm and trust the day.

In addition to looking in Evergreen, we suggest you look at towns near Evergreen such as Conifer, Indian Hills, Golden, Genesee, Idaho Springs, Boulder, Nederland, Morrison, Woodland Park, and other Colorado foothills towns. We’ll include some other venues in the foothills.

The benefit of an Evergreen wedding venue is the mountain views without the drive required for places like Summit County. The wedding season is also longer with spring coming sooner than in the higher elevations making a winter wedding less risky.

The Evergreen Lake House

The Flagstaff house in Boulder, Strawberry Creek Ranch is a little further out in Granby, and definitely consider places near Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton or Blackstone River Ranch in Idaho Springs.

As I mentioned, one of the great things about Evergreen is it’s proximity to Denver. Depending on your wedding guests you might look for hotels in Golden or West Denver for convenience. If you want to experience of staying in the mountain town, here are my top suggestions.
