Rocky Mountain Wedding Photography Planning Guide

As we dive into your wedding planning guide we’ll talk through timing and locations first. It’s true what they say about timing and location. Pick the right location at the right time and that’s how you get the most epic wedding photos.

Wedding Timing

Weddings in Rocky Mountain National Park are all about the timing. For example, you’ll want to avoid Memorial Day weekend and instead consider off-season avoiding both peak tourist seasons and time of day. The good news is that sunrise and sunset are not only less crowded but they’re the most beautiful choice for your photos.

That being said, you’ll want to plan your wedding based on the season as well. Are you interested in a snowy paradise and willing to risk the weather? Or are fall colors more your jam?

Certain areas of the park are only accessible seasonally and note that at those higher altitudes snow takes longer to melt.

Wedding Locations

When it comes to wedding locations in Rocky Mountain National Park, there are more decisions to make than usual. Will you get married in the park at ones of the designated ceremony locations or will you look for a venue that has it’s own wedding ceremony sites?

You may not be able to have your ceremony on Trail Ridge Road but that doesn’t mean you can’t take portraits there. So you may be looking to plan a ceremony site, reception venue, and favorite portrait locations. And yes, Trail Ridge Road should be on that list but note that Trail Ridge Road isn’t open year round. (See that whole section on timing!)

Wedding Ceremony locations in Rocky Mountain National Park

If you are interested in getting married in Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll want to at least consider a National Park ceremony. If the ceremony sites don’t accommodate the size of your wedding group, then you might be interested in doing couples portraits in Rocky Mountain National Park. Regardless of where you have your ceremony you can do portraits throughout the National Park as long as you obtain the proper permit and follow the rules.

The Rocky Mountain National Park website has all the information you’ll need on ceremony sites and what the accommodate in terns of size, vehicles, and more. You’ll need to apply in advance for a wedding permit. And an experienced photographer can help you plan the rest.

Remember, when planning a wedding in Rocky Mountain National Park wedding ceremony, it’s crucial to check with the park’s authorities for any permits or regulations. Additionally, consider the season and weather conditions, as the park experiences various climates throughout the year. Whether you prefer a lakeside ceremony, a mountain backdrop, or a secluded forest setting, Rocky Mountain National Park has the perfect ceremony site for your special day.

Sprague Lake:

Surrounded by mountains and featuring a picturesque lake, Sprague Lake offers a serene and intimate setting for your wedding ceremony. The lake is easily accessible, making it a great choice for couples with varying guest mobility.

Moraine Park:

With meadows, wildlife, and the iconic view of Longs Peak, Moraine Park provides a rustic and charming backdrop for your wedding ceremony. Capture timeless moments with the park’s diverse landscapes.

Bear Lake:

Nestled at an elevation of 9,475 feet, Bear Lake offers breathtaking views and crystal-clear waters, creating a magical atmosphere for your vows. Bear Lake is especially stunning during the fall when the aspen trees turn vibrant shades of gold. The summer months are off-limits for this site anyway and there are no weekend weddings permitted ever.

Upper Beaver Meadows:

Exchange your vows in open meadows with views of the continental divide. Make sure the road will be open, it often closes from mid-Oct to mid-May. Upper Beaver Meadows is one of my favorite ceremony sites.

3M Curve:

If you’re looking for a ceremony site with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, 3M Curve is a fantastic choice. Consider scheduling your wedding during sunset for a breathtaking and romantic experience.

Lily Lake Dock or Trail

Lily Lake is a great ceremony spot whether you choose to get married on the dock or alongside the trail. This ceremony site has the benefit of beautiful water and a mountain lake with less crowds than some other ceremony site locations like Bear Lake.

Alluvial Fan Bridge

Another busy spot, the Alluvial Fan Bridge would be a great spot around sunrise or sunset with the crowds are thinner.

Hidden Valley

One of our favorite ceremony sites, Hidden Valley boasts a variety of photogenic attributes from the wooden footbridge to the creekside wildflowers. A short hike makes this spot extra adventurous.

Wedding Reception Locations in Estes Park

For weddings in Rocky Mountain National Park, you can apply for a permit and choose from ceremony sites depending on the size of your wedding. There are a variety of nearby wedding venues in Estes Park for larger weddings and receptions after the ceremony.

Regardless of your choice of Estes Park wedding venue, consider leaving room in your timeline for portraits in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sunset in the alpine will take your breath away. Once you’re reviewed ceremony site locations, it’s time to look at reception venues.

Before finalizing any venue, be sure to consider the capacity, amenities, and any specific requirements they may have. Additionally, check for accommodation options nearby to make it convenient for your guests. Happy planning!

Tips for the Best Rocky Mountain National Park Wedding Photos

Below are some important tips for the best wedding photos. Beyond timing and location, these tips will help steer you in the right direction. Be warned though, I’m likely to talk more about timing and location!

It helps if you know your guest count and other priorities for the day such as desired wedding month. An adventure elopement will require less planning than a larger wedding as you aren’t limited to an official ceremony site.

Avoid Crowds

There are many epic locations to consider as backdrops for Rocky Mountain National Park weddings and elopements. The park is an inspiring landscape, but it’s no secret. One of the challenges to a National Park wedding is avoiding crowds.

Consider avoiding peak tourist season, trying for a weekday, and utilizing venues outside the park. Encourage early reservations. Traffic and parking can be difficult so plan and prepare for that.

Early morning and early evening can be less crowded than the middle of the day. Learn about the weather, terrain, and protected areas so that you can give back to the place that gives us so much.

Hire the Best Estes Park Wedding Photographers

The best wedding photographer will be able to act as a tour guide and ensure you get incredible photos while having a great experience. Our couples always find that getting married in the National Park ensures amazing memories to go along with the day.

Plan an effective timeline and think outside the box. There are plenty of views you can see from the car and some pretty sweet drives to experience. We recommend taking time to get out of the car and hit the trail, that’s how we’ve discovered some of our favorite spots that we share with our elopement couples.

elope in estes park sunset portrait on a rock

Leave No Trace

Despite the crowds, Rocky Mountain National Park is wild and beautiful. To keep in that way it’s important to educate yourself on the environment. There is a fragile alpine tundra to avoid walking on and Elk that just want to be left alone. And you can’t leave flower petals that weren’t already there.

You might also consider eco-friendly decorations and educating your guests, this is a great opportunity to think about the environment while emersed in it. Consider making a donation or participating in park conservation initiatives as a way of giving back.

While capturing the magic of your day, focus on the natural beauty of the surroundings. Avoid excessive alterations or staging that could compromise the authenticity of the park’s landscapes.

Simplify

To avoid wedding stress, consider how you might be able to simplify the plan for the day. Can you simplify transportation or the timeline or the things on your to-do list. You don’t really need much when it comes to a wedding somewhere so beautiful anyway (with natural flower petals surrounding you) so ease the stress and focus on why you chose Estes Park as your wedding destination.

Elopements and Rocky Mountain National Park Engagement Photos

If getting married in the National Park isn’t the right fit logistically, you can always elope or do your engagement photos in the park. Engagement photos especially are easier because you can simply get a photography permit and don’t need the additional wedding ceremony permit and reservation.

We’ve even had couples do a wedding portrait session on a different day than their wedding day. They get all dressed up and achieve the photos they want while keeping their actual wedding day more simple.

Engagement Photos in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky mountain national park engagements photos are a great wait to celebrate. Couples looking for a dramatic landscape to help tell the story of their love will delight in the accessible views. The same things that make the town great for engagement photos make it perfect for your elopement photography.

Imagine great views, excellent access, and somewhere awesome to celebrate afterwards. We always suggest timing things around sunrise or sunset when the light is beautiful and the locations are less crowded. We can help you find a seclude spot, especially if you’re willing to hike a little.

Boasting epic mountain views and the quaint nearby town of Estes Park, your guests will be delighted with Rocky Mountain National Park. As Estes Park wedding photographers we’re here to help you get those epic landscape portraits while also focusing on your wedding day experience.

Noam and Gretchen won over our hearts with their unbreakable love and joy. When rain started falling on their ceremony or blasting sideways into their reception, their smiles didn’t falter. Their guests simply cuddled up under umbrellas and drank hot toddies and we couldn’t be more proud to be their Estes Park Wedding photographer.

Gretchen and Noam are beautiful humans, inside and out. Their joy lights up a room and leaves a mark. Rain on your wedding day might seem like a challenge, or it could be indication of a double rainbow and epic sunsets ahead. Perspective is everything.

This couple and their supportive crew made the most of a crazy day and carried it late into the night with an epic dance party. As you peruse through these photos, I hope their love leaves as much of an impact on you as it does on me! Congrats to one amazing couple!

Some of our couples plan a separate wedding portrait session giving them the freedom to go somewhere awesome. This wedding portrait session in RMNP started out as a necessity to free up time and stress on the wedding day and resulted in a fun adventure for this rad couple! Not to mention the freedom we the photographers had to shoot epic portraits that you don’t always get on the wedding day.

Weddings are memorable days for a lot of reasons and in photographing them we strive to help couples relive the surreal moment that kicked off their marriage. This can mean different things to different people.

For Courtney and Wiley, it was about their love for each other and they life they’re building together. And it was also about celebrating with their loved ones. Doing a separate portrait session worked beautifully for these two because we were able to tell both stories, their adventurous love and their supportive community.

Thus, this will be a two part post so check back in for their wedding day festivities. In the meantime, enjoy this wedding portrait session in RMNP.

reasons to love a wedding portrait session

Beautiful right?
One of the reasons to love a wedding portrait session is that it gives us the time and freedom to go somewhere epic and create images of the couple without impacting their wedding guests. It’s a tough decision if you make me decide between great wedding portraits and spending time with your guests, the answer is both. How can we get both?

Also, there’s something to be said for the fact that maybe a wedding shouldn’t just be one day anyway. Not because we need more stress and chaos but because the ritual of celebrating the commitment to marriage is a powerful one. Some people take it lightly and feel like, eh we’re already pretty much married.

But it’s a big, beautiful, amazing thing. Doing life together is a decision to ride the rollercoaster that is life alongside someone. It’s helping each other enjoy the highs and learn from the lows.

And yeah, sometimes we make too big of a deal of making the wedding day perfect but sometimes we make to small of a deal of the commitment itself.

Hope you enjoyed these photos! Next check out more of our adventures. You can see this recent 3m Curve Colorado wedding or perhaps you’re interested in learning how to price wedding photography.

Today I get to shoot this adorable 3m Curve Colorado Wedding. 3m Curve is a popular wedding and elopement location in Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado. Getting married in the National Park is a pretty spectacular experience.

Alex and Joe are a laid-back, low-maintenance, and adorable couple! They are both fun and funny and could’t stop smiling. Maybe that’s because they were getting married in an incredibly beautiful location?

3m curve colorado wedding

Here is a preview from this incredible RMNP wedding. As you’ll see it was sort of an elopement or a micro wedding of sorts. The guest list was minimal but sometimes it’s all about quality over quantity.

Alex and Joe kicked things off with a short and casual ceremony. Then we explored a few fun spots in the National Park for some great memories and images. What you may or may not be able to see if the photos is that the previous day as warm and sunny, meanwhile their wedding day was a little chilly!

That didn’t stop these two from having an awesome day. They are now officially a “we” and I can tell that they make a great team for all of life’s serious and hilarious moments.

elope in estes park

As you see, these two chose to elope in Estes Park. Estes Park is a sweet little Colorado mountain town at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Due to its incredible beauty, Estes Park plays host to adventurous couples looking to tie the know.

You can see from the photos why eloping in Estes Park is appealing and it won’t be hard to find a venue or isolated spot to say I do. Let me tell you what I mean.

rocky mountain national park wedding venue that’s not a venue

There are a lot of great wedding venues you can check out some of them on our Rocky Mountain National Park wedding photography guide. However, for those looking for something simple, the National Park actually makes it pretty easy to make it happen. They have all of their rules and permit information stated clearly on their website.

What I love about RMNP is that having everything stated clearly is a win-win. Everyone knows the rules and is working together to make sure this beautiful location doesn’t get too overrun with brides and photographers trampling the tundra or provoking the elk. Photographers and couples can easily get permits, the park can know that we’re there and easily inform us of rules and regulations.

Here’s more Estes Park wedding photography that you may enjoy. This Back Canyon Inn wedding in Estes Park features one of our favorite venues.

3m curve

3m Curve is one of the locations that the National Park designates as a spot for wedding ceremonies. They have a maximum number of permits that they issue so plan early and consider weekdays when the park is less crowded. The permit only allows you for 15 people and 3 cars at 3m curve.

The site is 3.5 miles from Beaver Meadows visitor center and while there’s a short hike from the car it’s fairly easy to access if you wear sturdy shoes and can step over a few rocks.

Who’s ready for some Estes Park wedding photography? I know I am. Marilyn and Jordan are the sweetest and from the dessert to the vows that’s how I would describe this day.

Their Colorado engagement pictures in the mountains show their playful, fun, and yet romantic style. I think their wedding photos do the same. Playful and romantic is a hard balance to create but these two accomplished it with east.

Did I say two? I meant three! Who could forget their adorable dog Cash who carried the rings and almost stole the shot.

Rain in Colorado is a little unpredictable, it’s best not to worry about it. It’s best to just assume you’ll have clear skies for some portraits, a ceremony, and some cocktails. Then if the storm clouds provide an epic sunset it’s all for the best.

Marriage is about love, rain or shine. I hope you enjoy this wedding photography!

What’s better than Rocky Mountain National park engagement photos? Empty nester pics! The only thing better than hanging out with young love is getting to spend time with wise love.

Steph and Mike are celebrating there soon to be empty nester status, but more importantly the fact that they stayed focused on their love and their passion. It’s always an honor to be around love, there’s always something to learn. I’ll tell you what, there’s even more to learn from couples that have been there, done that, and still look at each other with joy and passion.

In the case of this photoshoot, I wasn’t asking the newlywed questions like, “how did you meet?” but rather important ones like, “how did you keep your marriage strong?” I’m grateful for the chance to be around these two and soak up their wisdom and excitement for life.

As wedding photographers we get to see a lot of first chapters. Now that we’re a decade into our own marriage it’s pretty awesome to witness some of the other chapters. Steph and Mike are about to start a new one and I have no doubt they’ll continue to thrive.

Let’s feast our eyes on some Rocky Mountain National Park empty nester pics. Nothing says love like the Colorado Rockies. Ok, maybe a sunset!

This Black Canyon Inn Estes Park Wedding might just whisk you away into a fairytale. It’s got all the things: the breathtaking setting, the likeable characters, and the love story. We’re love story lovers, we want to hear them, see them, and photograph them.

Black Canyon Inn in Estes Park is stunning in every season, if you don’t believe me check out these Black Canyon Inn Wedding Photos. Nestles in the Colorado Rockies right near the gem of Rocky Mountain National park, this wedding venue captures hearts. It certainly captured ours, or was that the adorable Emily and Gus.

I give high-fives to anyone who has survived wedding planning ever, let along during this 2020-2021 confusion. Emily and Gus slid into their wedding day with smiles on. They learned to be flexible, adaptable, and countless other skills that will serve them well in their marriage.

Isn’t that what this is about? I don’t shoot wedding photos in order to capture the latest fashion, I wouldn’t know it if I saw it. I shoot weddings to tell love stories so that when you’re 10 years deep and your kids need all your attention and a pandemic hits and takes out your business, you’ll remember why it’s worth it.

One look at Emily and Gus has me able to say with confidence, it’s worth it. It’s so worth it. Can’t wait to hear how much you agree.

And that’s a wrap! Didn’t I tell you? LOVE STORIES, they get me every time!

Buffy and Jesse are making the best of their wedding season with multiple episodes to the story. We can’t wait to share their fall Colorado wedding pictures. You’ll see vibrant fall colors and epic mountain views.

In true Rocky Mountain National Park style, the wedding day was vibrant, colorful, and windy! Jesse rocked a purple jacket to pop perfectly with the fall colors. Jess had an amazing dress complete with a train that caught the wind like a parachute.

What you don’t see is as the evening goes on, Marc and I get to put on jackets, hats, and gloves. We were warm and cozy while their champagne turen to snow. (Slight exaggeration!)

These two lovebirds were troopers and we had a blast celebrating with them. Congrats! And let the celebrations continue!

Today I’m sharing photos from a Colorado micro wedding in Estes Park. WTF is a micro wedding? Stay tuned because I think I’m going to write a blog post about it but essentially options to celebrate are limited right now.

Luckily, Iris and Rob have learned to be flexible. That’s a silver lining of what 2020 is teaching us. You can’t have the wedding you imagined, planned, and paid for?

Oh. Ok. Well, try this instead.

Scheduled strategically before Iris may or may not have to go back to school, there’s that flexibility test again, their wedding was a lot smaller than originally planned. Of course, I don’t know how many people were there via the live stream. Hopefully I didn’t trip or something embarrassing while taking pictures.

Some things I learned:

I learned that I can still tell when people are smiling, even it it’s behind masks. I learned that a small group of people can still REALLY make a couple feel loved. And, most importantly, I learned that love is still happening in the midst of everything else.

Iris and Rob are easy to be around, fun to talk to, and a blast to photograph. Rob made Iris so comfortable you would have thought she was a movie star. They both had a twinkle in their eye, when they didn’t have a tear.

We’re grateful to Iris and Rob for letting us witness their wedding, I know that with a smaller guest list it’s a harder decision to have us on it. So with that being said, I’m pretty sure they didn’t hire us to write about it, let’s check out some photos from their Estes Park wedding!

Wanna see what Colorado winter adventure sessions looks like?! It’s more than just a pretty picture, it’s a full on adventure. Caution: epic memories ahead!

It’s trendy these days this idea of an adventure session but are you ready for the truth? Colorado winter adventure sessions mean REAL adventure. You can’t get to that mountain top without a hike and if it’s winter it will be that much harder.

And colder! Jenna and George know what I’m talking about. It’s something we do for love or for the gram or for the experience, perhaps all of the above.

Jenna and I emailed back and forth trying to plan their adventure elopement. We had a blast brainstorming locations and talking about potential weather challenges. But when it comes down to it, there’s only so much we can control and in the end we had to roll with it.

Jenna and George were a blast to explore with. We loved talking, hiking, shivering, and laughing with them. The wind was crazy making a few inches of fresh snow more like a few feet.

The result was some crazy memories and some of my favorite photos depicting what a real adventure session looks like. Sure they look stunning standing on the rocks or near the lake but what I love more is how rad they look hiking.

An adventure bride like Jenna comes prepared. With layers (snow suits over wedding attire), hiking boots, and a handy spot on the backpack to hold the bouquet.  Luckily when your hair straight up freezes you don’t have to worry about what it looks like in the wind because it will look awesome!

Thanks to Jenna and George for making it happen rain or shine. Or snow or wind! Can’t wait to share these photos with you.
