  • Only 2 hours from Denver International Airport

Planning for Your Breckenridge Engagement Photos

If you’re early in the wedding planning stages, you can start by having your engagement photos in Breckenridge to give yourselves an idea of what the town has to offer for your wedding. Breckenridge is a great balance of stunning wilderness and a cute mountain town. It’s nice to feel like you’re away in the mountains while still having the convenience and fun of a town.

Sometimes we even start our Breckenridge engagement sessions with a beverage somewhere like the Canteen Tap House. Watch out, their drinks are sure to have you feeling extra confident. From there, there are numerous trails and passes to venture to for stunning mountain views away from the crowds.

Whether you’re getting married in the stunning mountain town or not, Breckenridge engagement photos are a great way to celebrate your love. There are a lot of easy-to-access locations with epic views, as well as some harder-to-access spots if that’s more your thing. Engagement photos are a fun part of the wedding planning process and Breckenridge is a great spot for a memorable kick-off.

Achieving Epic Breckenridge Elopement Photography

Maybe you’re not planning a big mountain wedding but rather an intimate elopement in the Rocky Mountains. The same things that make the town great for engagement photos make it perfect for your Breckenridge elopement photography. Imagine great views, excellent access, and somewhere awesome to celebrate afterward.

What I love about Breckenridge elopements is that there are a lot of great spots to get away for some privacy. But you don’t have to go far from the comfort of the town. It makes for a fun wedding weekend of both love and adventure.

The benefit of an elopement (in this Breckenridge elopement photographer’s opinion) is that there is no time pressure. Therefore, you can make your elopement day schedule all about beauty and light resulting in epic photos. Can you say sunset elopement, anyone?!

Planning a Breckenridge Wedding with Epic Photography

It’s time to dive into some more nitty-gritty wedding planning. As I alluded to above, I’m speaking from a photographer’s point of view so these tips will help you make sure you have great photos. Leave it to your venue or caterer to make sure you have great food and your top two priorities are taken care of.

Or are they? That’s step one in your planning process. Take the time to decide what your priorities are and use that to help in your wedding planning process.

Download our free guide on how to prioritize your planning so that your wedding is a memorable adventure. Once you have your priorities straight, let’s dive in.

Timing for Your Breckenridge Wedding Photography

When it comes to getting the best photography for your Breckenridge weddings it’s all about timing. That means picking the right season and picking the right time of day. Do you want a winter wonderland, fall colors, or summer wildflowers?

From there, we suggest timing things around sunrise or sunset when the light is beautiful and the locations are less crowded. Sometimes the timing of everything is dictated by the wedding venue but the top venues (see below) understand the importance of epic photography. If you’re eloping or have a small guest list, we can help you find a secluded spot, especially if you’re willing to hike a little.

You can even have a winter wedding in Breckenridge as there are great ways to combine snow sports, cozy fireplaces, and whiskey from Breckenridge Distillery.

The Right Spots for Your Wedding Photos

When it comes to wedding photography, location-specific knowledge is invaluable. Breckenridge is a stunning destination with breathtaking landscapes, and a photographer who is familiar with the area will know the best spots for capturing stunning shots.

Your photographer will have a deep understanding of the unique lighting conditions, the best angles, and the hidden gems that make Breckenridge so special. They can take you to picturesque locations that perfectly complement your wedding theme and create a visual story that reflects the beauty of the surroundings. You want a stunning backdrop to be the setting of your love story.

Depending on your wedding venue, there might be great photo locations on site or you might want to plan some time for a first look somewhere special. It’s worth the extra thought towards the timeline. to make the most of your mountain wedding in Summit County.

Top Breckenridge Colorado Wedding Venues

It’s time to talk about wedding venues. There are a ton of wedding venues in Breckenridge which is part of what makes it a great wedding destination. You’ll want to find the wedding venues that best fit your vibe and then narrow it down based on your group size and other priorities.

Below are some of my favorite wedding venues but some of my favorite weddings in Breckenridge CO have had ceremony somewhere other than the venue itself. Be sure to contact us for help with your vision (sometimes I double as a wedding planner by giving our couples location tips based on over a decade of experience.)

10 Mile Station

Ten Mile Station has got to be one of my favorite wedding venues at Breckenridge Ski Resort because of the stunning backdrop. You’ll love the historic charm of the building and the amazing views from the ceremony site.

The Sevens

The Sevens at Breck is another one of my favorite wedding venues due to its location on the ski resort. It’s a smaller venue so a smaller crowd but a picture-perfect place if you always envisioned a ski resort wedding.

Final Tips from these Breckenridge Wedding Photographers

As Colorado mountain wedding photographers we love watching our clients and their guests experience all that Breckenridge has to offer. If you are coming from out of town it’s important to know that a wedding in the Colorado mountains requires you to be prepared. Below are a few final tips to help with your destination wedding in the Rocky Mountains.

Weather

Consequently, the weather can change at a moment’s notice so it’s important to dress in layers. Regardless of the time of year, you’ll want to be prepared for seasons to change throughout the day. Have a plan for rain, snow, and sun.

Adventure

Breckenridge weddings are a choose-your-own-adventure type of thing. If you want, you can stand on a mountain top but you might have to get your dress dirty and bring a change of shoes. Throw some extra hairspray on because it’ll probably be windy up there at your mountain wedding too!

Altitude

Also, the altitude can cause problems if you don’t remember to drink enough water or drink a little less alcohol than usual. Often, it can be helpful for guests who might have problems with the altitude to arrive early to get adjusted. Give your guests a heads up to be on the lookout for feeling the impacts of altitude.

Beyond the Wedding

There is plenty to do in Breckenridge so bring your hiking shoes, fishing poles, and window shopping skills for the quaint yet vibrant downtown.

One of our best recommendations is to hire a great planner like Erica Sarell or Snapdragons Celebrations to help make sure everything runs smoothly.

This Twin Eagles Lodge Breckenridge Wedding was soggy. Soggy with rain and happy tears! It was soggy with love.

Raechel and Nick weren’t going to let a little rain get them down, they must know it’s good luck. After all, their luck blew us away. As we drove up the mountain for pictures and the rain was falling, we weren’t sure how we were going to shoot portraits and bridal party pictures.

And then, the rain let up just enough for photos and a sweet little ceremony!

We only recently started adding an option for videography to our smaller wedding and elopement packages. Essentially, during COVID when people were having smaller weddings we realized that they don’t always need or want two photographers in contrast to large weddings when there are a lot of advantages to two photographers. But we couldn’t imagine splitting up, so when these two asked us if we would shoot video we said something along the lines of, “I do.”

Congrats to the beautiful couple! Hope you enjoy this little highlight video and photo preview from their Breckenridge wedding.

Their Breckenridge elopement wasn’t the plan, nothing about last year was really part of the plan. Ever since their fall engagement photo shoot colorado, we have learned that Kelsey and Jeff are open for adventure. That flexibility and love of life regardless of the plan is what made this 10 Mile Station Breckenridge wedding so perfect.

There’s a small part of me that’s sad to write this blog post. As wedding photographers, we get attached to our couples. We get to see them plan a wedding, celebrate and engagement, and then say their vows on the wedding day.

The end.

With Kelsey and Jeff the story has been longer, we’ve gotten to see then postpone, reschedule, rework, and re-envision. For all the stress and chaos of 2020, the couples that we’ve gotten to celebrate with TWICE is like getting to tell a bigger story. And I’m grateful!

I’m grateful for the moments, memories, and love I’ve gotten to witness because these two let us into their loves. And now, I get to let them into yours with these photos.

Helen and William found us when they went looking for a Breckenridge elopement photographer and we’re sure glad they did! Planning an elopement is pretty fun because the main step is picking the perfect spot.

Helen and William decided they found the perfect spot but in order to get the views they wanted they would need to get married at sunrise instead of sunset. As you know, we were game! We love sunrise, but we’re not the ones that have to look good that early in the morning!

I don’t know how they did it but they took our breath away with their beauty, joy, and commitment to gratitude. Cold, wind, nor snow was going to get in the way of the appreciation these two have for the beauty of the mountains. Luckily we switched the day at the last minute so that we got fresh snow on the peaks rather than on our heads.

Other than that, everything went just a planned. It’s easy to do that with elopement because the plan is to have fun and get married!

I am in love. And so are they. I can’t get over Alison and Anje’s Breckenridge Colorado elopement photos.

I knew we would be fast friends when we met these two and taking their Colorado engagement photos at an alpine lake sealed the deal. Seeing how gracefully they handled a COVID wedding blew me away.

That’s how strong love is. Sometimes it blows you away when you feel stuck, it gives you hope when you feel lost, it’s something to celebrate amidst grief. The first photo I shared was one of a clearing storm with the following sentiment:

Sometimes when we’re in a storm all we can see is the rain. We forget about what happens after the storm. We forget that the fog lifts, the sun comes out, and we’re given a fresh perspective for the beauty that surrounds us.

Lately, it’s been hard to see couples struggle deciding what to do about their wedding, I don’t have any answers for them. Alison and Anje remained optimistic about their vision of sharing vows on a mountain. They even picked the perfect spot until rain stole the views away.

To be honest, I didn’t even notice it was raining until after the ceremony ended. I wouldn’t have known had it not been for little droplets on suit jackets and frozen fingers trying to unfold vows or put on rings. Everyone was present, in the moment, and focused on the commitment of love.

real love real moments

Furthermore, one of the things I love about elopements is that the moments are real. Everything from touching up lipstick looking at a rain drenched car window, to walking barefoot across an alpine meadow, to a moose encounter. It was was all pure “in the moment” perfection.

I had flashbacks of getting ready for a high school dance, giddy joyful comfort. And then, when Alison’s besties facetimed to see her in her dress I lost it. They were there with us, not in the room but supporting Alison in spirit.

Lastly, I’ve been saying it for a decade but love is a freaking adventure.

Not just a perfect instagram photo type of adventure but a “4WD adventure up a mountain where you feel your tires leave the ground just for a second and then find yourself in a meadow straight out of a storybook” kind of adventure.

Thanks for letting us be a part of your wedding day, I know it was your day and all… but it was just what we needed!

The post Running on Mountain Tops (Ten Mile Range Traverse) appeared first on .

]]>
I recently survived running on mountain tops. The objective was the Ten Mile Range traverse from Frisco to Breckenridge, Colorado. The result was over 7000 feet of elevation gain and bagging 9 out of 10 peaks before the rain washed us down the mountain.

I’ll tell you this: it wasn’t pretty. Well, the views were breathtaking and life changing. The sunrise was the kind of light-play that heals the ache in your heart.

But yeah, I only barely made it to the top of each peak without quitting, cursing, or telling my “running” partners what I really thought of them. I mean, I had a lot of time to think about it while I huffed and puffed my way to one false summit after another. Like I said, it wasn’t pretty.

When you climb ten summits you have to prepare for there to be a heck of a lot of false summits.

Why isn’t everyone a mountain runner!?

Wait, who put that question mark there? I’m pretty sure it should be a statement. It should be the beginning of a thesis.

10 Reasons Why Everyone isn’t a Mountain Runner.

I’m not sure how many mountains you have to stumble down before your ankles and knees get strong enough to actually take it. There’s some supernatural kind of stubborness involved in the process.

At one point in the morning, which was mostly steep scrambling up and down over 3rd and 4th class terrain, Ian mentioned that we were trail running without the trails and without the running.

By mid-morning, because we started at 3am, even my running partners who have been doing this for years were, “feeling the hurt.” But if that’s true then what I was feeling was way beyond hurt. It was next level.

But in a weird way you can’t be mad because you chose this.

you chose this

Write that again… you chose this. You chose to wake up at 2:45am, wake-up being inaccurate working seeing as though I’m pretty sure you never actually fell asleep. You shoes to hike, climb, nay “run” up 3000+ vertical feet before even the sun deemed it late enough to rise.

And you chose to keep going even after everything was starting to hurt.

Why? Because something about it feels so good. Maybe it’s the power, the strength, and the proving that you can.

Not that you have to prove it to anyone. No one really cares actually. They all just think we’re a little stupid because that is what we do for fun, on our one precious day off in what feels like months.

I exaggerate. But hey, that’s what it’s all about right? Extreme ups and downs: literally, emotionally, spiritually.

ten mile range traverse

The objective was the 10 Mile Traverse from Frisco to Breckenridge, Colorado. We wanted to run across the Ten Mile Mountain Range, but first we had to get up there. The first half of the day was more climbing than running including some technical 4th class route finding.

As an experienced rock climber, I felt at home on the rock minus a few key points.

  1. The rock was wet and slippery from the rain that had been pouring all night which mandated that we move slowly and methodically.
  2. I knew that the technical sections were likely not going to be the hardest aspect of the day, I was more concerned about endurance.
  3. We had a fairly hard time window because the rain was going to come around noon or 1pm and there was a long way to go so speed was important.

I mean, look at that ominous sky!

9 outta 10 ain’t bad

I think that when an objective is so intense, it’s fairly easy to keep expectations in check. It’s hard to be on the ridge between peaks 9 and 10 and make the choice to head back down. At the same time, it’s an easy choice when it’s dumping rain, you’re exhausted, and you still have to get back down.

running on mountain tops

If the main goal was running on mountain tops, we succeeded. It felt pretty otherworldly to prance across a ridge bagging peak after peak after peak.

Typically, as a climber and photographer I don’t move at such an aggressive pace. I always thought that it was a waste, why not slow down and enjoy the views. Now, I’m not sure how I feel because I also recognize the advantages of being able to cover more ground in less time.

Running on mountain tops makes you feel like a bird. There’s a sense of freedom and release. You’re traveling across the top of the world by the power of your own two feet.

But first you have to get up there.

And have enough energy to run.

Then you’re reminded you only have two feet with skinny ankles.

Lastly, you realize you still have to get back down.

But yeah, I guess it was fun.

Today I’m back from radio silence to share the joy and the love from Kelsey and Jeffs Breckenridge elopement. We’ve been a little busy around here so we’ve had to reprioritize a few things such a blogging. But we’re back at it an who better to kick it off than these two love birds?!

Sometimes life throws us a curve ball. Or sometimes life IS a curveball. That’s 2020. Kelsey and Jeff had dreams and plans for a big bash to celebrate their love. Instead, they got us hooting and hollering as they stood alone on a rock with an officiant overlooking a stunning lake.

It wasn’t what they imagined or planned or expected but it was beautiful. Kelsey was beautiful, hell even Jeff was beautiful! Their joy was radiant and healing and contagious.

Marc and I don’t get to photography that many weddings this year but I’m glad this was one of them. Kelsey and Jeff are a blast, and so in love. Check out their fall engagement photo shoot here.

Congrats you two! And thanks for not cutting us off your guest-list.

Bad joke? Let’s get to the photos!

This Sevens Breckenridge wedding was idyllic. The challenge of a late fall wedding is that the beauty of the fall colors and the potential for wind and weather is a tough gamble. Lisa and Dan must have put in a word with mother nature because their wedding day was spectacular.

From what I heard, it sounds like the rehearsal was a different story and the wind was fierce. When I got dressed in the morning I was prepared for cold weather. But when it came down to the actual wedding day it was warm, sunny, and stunning.

Check out their Breckenridge engagement photography to get a sense of the different seasons we got to experience with these two. I have to say, they were joyful and thankful throughout it all! Lisa and Dan are such a blast to be around I can’t believe I didn’t know them before their wedding.

They made us feel comfortable and appreciated while also giving us some inspiration in the form of a beautiful love story to photograph. Lisa was a stunning bride! These two warmed our hearts in the perfect fall wedding day.

Wendy and Allison decided to have us capture some Colorado fall engagement photos during their Breckenridge vacation. We loved meeting and exploring with them. Allison is a pastor and Wendy is a manufacturing trainer, needless to say we learned a lot.

Wendy reached out to us as a surprise for Allison thinking their Colorado vacation was the perfect time to capture some engagement photos. We had a lot of fun hiking, exploring, and soaking in the views with them. They were fun to be around and incredibly easy to talk to, which is a little distracting when the scenery is also calling my name.

Honestly, if you haven’t noticed, one of the best parts of our work is getting to know amazing people and hearing their stories. I never would have guess what a hopeless romantic Wendy was had Allison not cracked me up with stories of their love. Another one of the best parts will become obvious in a few moments.

Colorado is beautiful. There is a reason people come here to visit, get married, or take a vacation and capture some engagement photos. Allison and Wendy had an escape from their daily lives in a wonderland of mountains and fall colors.

It was an honor to meet them, learn from them, and capture their love! I can’t wait to see what Wendy’s next surprise is. Enjoy this preview and these views!

I wonder if it would be a good idea to shoot Colorado engagement pictures at an alpine lake. Hmmm, it’s definitely a great idea. The best idea yet!

Thanks to the incredible Anje, and his lovely bride, we got a tour of some epic alpine lakes in Breckenridge. The stress of traffic, initially navigating to the wrong trailhead, and a pretty rough road all dissipated the moment I saw these two and their stoke for our upcoming hike. I was instantly at ease, in my element, and having fun.

That was until I took my first photos of the day. Then, I was in the zone. The photos only got better and the light seemed to be cooperating perfectly.

While we love being tour guides there is something magical about getting to shoot something the first time we experience it. It’s even more fascinating to do it in the pleasure of these two amazing humans. Seriously, how lucky are we?!

We met this two at Kaley and Taylor’s wedding, check out their Black Canyon Inn wedding photos, and we are so grateful. We met Kaley and Taylor through an amazing couple that we shot back in 2013 and have remained friends with. THIS is why I say our best couples come from our best couples, so many amazing people I know because of one day in 2013 when I was living in California.

It took us awhile to chose our favorites, I hope you approve! We loved so many of these Colorado engagement pictures. Cheers to the rad couple and thanks for everything!
